The Kandy–Ella stretch is one of the most famous train journeys in the world, and that fame is exactly the problem: reserved seats on this route can sell out weeks in advance, especially in high season (December–April) and on weekends.
How to book: Sri Lanka Railways runs an official online seat reservation system where you can book up to 30 days ahead, choosing your class (First, Second, Third, or Observation Saloon) and paying by card. You’ll receive an e-ticket by email — no physical ticket is issued, so a printed or digital copy is fine to board with.
The catch: A reservation only locks in once payment is completed — if you’re slow at the payment stage during high-demand periods, your seat can be released to someone else. Have your card details ready before you start.
Insider tip: If the online system shows the popular route as sold out, don’t assume you’re stuck — unreserved third-class tickets are usually still available on the day at the station, and plenty of budget travellers do the ride standing or on a fold-down seat for the experience. It’s not comfortable for the full 3–4 hours, but it works in a pinch.
